The Batman Who Sparkles?

Em Eades

On August 22nd, the trailer for the long-anticipated movie, The Batman, was released. One thing that bugs Batman fans the most is the batman actor himself: Robert Pattinson. For those who have been living under a rock, Robert Pattinson played Edward Cullen in the infamous Twilight series.

Many find it difficult to look past this, as the movies themselves have created such a lasting memory. Another example of this is Daniel Radcliff, aka Harry Potter. Since he played the role of the young wizard for most of his life, seeing him in things such as Now You See Me 2 and The Miracle Workers is a bit strange. But Robert Pattinson, who also played Cedric Diggory in The Wizarding World, is associated with the sparkling vampire we all know and love to hate. And apparently, Pattinson hates it too. He recently divulged that he appreciated them for giving him the option of being in other movies after the book, but he didn’t like the movies. (see: the horror on his face when he learned that Stefanie Meyer was writing a new book.)

As a person whose sister loved Twilight and was scarred by that phase in her life, I was very upset when the news came out about his role as Batman, seeing that I am a huge Batman fan myself. But that was until the trailer came out for the movie.

The movie has two villains that The Batman hasn’t encountered on screen for a long time: The riddler and the penguin. The last penguin was a mutant played by Danny Devito in the film Batman Returns directed by Tim Burton in 1992. While the portrayal was good, it wasn’t true to the comic character we all know: the cuttthroat arms dealer who hates Bruce Wayne and wants vengeance. The riddler was last portrayed by Jim Carrey in 1995 in the movie Batman Forever. This riddler is very poorly portrayed. The riddler is actually a very dangerous character, and the Jim Carrey version makes him seem like a slapstick knock off joker.

DC taking on two characters that got a bad representation in their movies before is a really good sign. They’ve done it before. Need examples? The Joker, Two Face, Catwoman, Bane. All these characters have been given new life, adding more depth and way better costumes.

The Batman is going to be the first in a trilogy of movies, and our hopes are high for the next generation of Batman heroes and villains.
