When approaching senior year, students are given a lot more opportunities for school. Whether it’s classes or being able to leave school earlier, these opportunities may be something that could interest many students.
With half-days, students leave school early, or get to school later depending on what half they have it in. There are a few other half-day options as well. Some people prefer the option to cadet teach, which is where someone will leave during the day, and go to a different school, such as the middle schools, and co-teach alongside another teacher.
There is also an option called Area 31, which can be taken as a junior, and students leave to go take more hands-on classes.
The other option students are given for half-days is to go to a job. Students have the option to make money while they would normally be in school. Doing this requires them to fill out a time sheet with things they have learned at work.
Senior Nolan Roberts, who works at Rockstar Pizza, leaves mid-day, to go to work: “I love being able to leave early. It gives me a nice break.”
For many students, it provides good work experience and more flexible hours of work. It can be a nice break from school for some people.
The ability to leave school early also prevents students from being stuck in a lot of the after-school traffic that occurs in the student parking lot. This can be very nice, since only seniors will be leaving at that time, and not every senior takes half-days, so there will be even less people leaving.
Senior Joshua Worstell is an example of someone who leaves for Area 31. He attends the radio broadcasting class and goes live on air.
“It’s so fun. I get to go live and have fun with my friends,” Worstell said.
There are many things to consider when students are going into senior year, and incoming seniors can consider their options. It could provide internship experience, work experience and many good opportunities for students to get a mental break from school and even make money at the same time.
