Every year, the biomedical students work on a project where they come up with a product and have to pitch it to the “sharks” (teachers). Everyone who is in this class has to do this which is inspired from the show “Shark Tank”.
The biomedical students worked for a few weeks to make a product that is based off a product that is currently in use. They were each assigned a job to specialize in. The roles were scientist, marketing and manufacturing specialist and businessman.
“We started off our company making high quality suture kits for EMTs,” senior Tyler Phillips said.
The product then had to be tested after making it. The results came back on whether the original was a better fit and what they needed to improve. The results showed that the suture kit was reliable.
“[We] investigated the suture pen thoroughly… [we] halved the complication rate,” senior Logan Astin said.
During this planning process, there were a lot of trial and errors to get their products right. As the groups asked their teachers what potential issues their product could have, they made those changes as necessary.
At the Shark Tank event, they presented their products, and the sharks would then decide if they wanted to invest in the product and how much of the company they wanted. The group would later decide if they wanted to take the deal or not.
“Helps with confronting, I guess, higher ups in the medical field,” Astin said.
