The brand new Brownsburg Art Club offers students the chance to put their creative minds to work. Art Club is a space where students can learn new techniques and improve their art skills. The club can also be a free space for students to work on either their own individual art or projects offered by art teacher Katie Keith. Keith allows a chance for students to grow outside of school hours while still having a fun time.
The creation of the club has been talked about for a while, so it was only a matter of time before it became a new activity at BHS. “This has been a highly requested thing for a couple years now. We used to have art club and then it slowly transformed into NAHS and there’s a requirement to get into NAHS as far as classes and grades. So this is kind of a great pre-curser to that. So, before they get to the three classes, they can take art club, get involved with arts, learn new things to keep going and be excited about it,” Keith said. Students finally have a chance to partake in something they enjoy without any boundaries. It is a way to advance in art without having to meet high expectations. Art Club is an inclusive place where any student can join without limitations.
Art Club is a great opportunity for any student looking to explore themselves in an artistic way. Even if they aren’t planning to include art as a career. “It’s really cool and I like art, and I’ve been wanting to learn different stuff that we could do,” freshman Lea Curry said. Curry is a student at BHS who uses art as a hobby. Students who also use arts as a hobby are highly encouraged to join the club as a way of self-expression and creativity.
Not only is the Art Club an inclusive place to be, but it can also be a place where students can communicate. Students who are looking for a place to be can find others interested in the same ideas or hobbies as them, allowing them to get a social experience with people like themselves that may otherwise be difficult to get during the school day.
Art Club allows students to explore art as a hobby and even encourage it as a new class option. “It’s an opportunity to learn new techniques, like right now we are doing stained glass which a lot of students don’t get to do unless they take a sculpture class. Our goal is to go through and do extra time with different techniques and new processes and maybe encourage people to take different classes,” Keith said. Keith wants to give students at BHS the chance to do different activities that most people don’t have the chance to do while at school and in regular art class. The goal of the club it to give students a free and open space to explore their art skills.
