On September 9, 2024, a school board meeting was held at the Central Office. These meetings happen every second Monday of each month. At this school board meeting, the main topics were updates on operations happening within the schools, updates on student immunization and planning for the 2025 budget.
Since the beginning of the school year, the school district has been trying to make sure that all the students are caught up on all their immunizations. The IC 20-34-4 is a statutory requirement for the students’ immunizations.
On August 16, 2024, the school started to contact the parents/guardians of students who are missing any immunizations. They have continued sending messages to the parents/guardians of students who still have not received their immunizations. The rates for each week’s immunizations are getting better. On August 16, 2024, the school district had around 781 that needed to get it. Then on August 23, 2024, there were only 574 students. Each week around 200 less need to get it.
If the students don’t have it, the principal will start to plan for exclusion from school starting next Monday, September 16, 2024.
Students will need to bring proper documentation of immunizations or a planned appointment in order to return to school.
By fall break there are going to be construction updates around the schools. At BHS, they are finishing the North Gymnasium. At Eagle and Brown Elementary, their playgrounds are also going to be finished. Assistant Superintendent for Operations Shane Hacker says that the children are happy about the playground that was just finished at the BECC, and he can tell the children are excited about the changes that are happening.
Phase 1 of the tennis courts are going to be completed next. The boys’ tennis team won’t be able to use it for their season, but the girls’ team will be able to use it for this spring.
When comments were opened up to patrons, Crossroads PSG member and mother to two Crossroads students Michelle Pool expressed concerns about the time her kids take to get to school.
“Last year we were pretty patient with this, and they are spending 100 minutes to get to school,” said Pool. “A 100 minutes to get to school. I wouldn’t want to go that far. Then have to concentrate for a whole day. My kids personally spend two hours on a school bus.”
She thinks that it’s not safe for her children to take that long to get to school and home. Pool stated that she had to pull her children out of sports because of the time it takes to get home from the bus.
The school board said they would look at the problem and try to see if they can do anything about it.
Lastly, Hacker said that they are selling the North soccer fields to Bethesda Christian School. The members feel like it’s a good idea because many of the players that play on those fields are within the Brownsburg school system. After this is sold, the Brownsburg Community School Corporation will have no more land on the North property. This should be closed in the next 30 days.
The next school board meeting will be held on October 7, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.
