What is wrestling? Wrestling is a combat sport where two people grapple to throw or pin their opponent to the ground. Wrestling has affected many people, but it’s affected Brownsburg especially. Brownsburg won the state championship as a team and as individuals in 2024.
The BHS wrestling team has two teams: junior varsity (JV) and varsity (V). Some of Brownsburg wrestlers have been wrestling for a while or they just started out.
You might think when the wrestlers have a big competition they will be jamming to their favorite music or doing something to get their nerves out. However, each wrestler has their own way to get out their nerves before a match. Senior Maximus Forrester likes to “eat a good meal and go to sleep early.”
Senior Gunner Henry uses a different way to try to calm his nerves before the big day. “[To make weight], I kind of just lay in bed, like seven o’clock, just kind of shut my brain down a little bit and just kind of stay loose, I guess, and just not really try and think about what’s going on and just relax and make sure I know I’m in the right mindset,” Henry said.
Wrestling has helped both these athletes with their mindset and their physical strength.
Forrester believes wrestling “definitely made me a lot tougher,” said Forrester. “It’s definitely made me handle adversity much better.”
Henry enjoys wrestling because it allows him to have a lot of hand-to-hand things, “You’re always having to work hard to be the best,” said Henry. “So, I think taking this work and then just knowing that […] I can work hard to do anything else.”
The Brownsburg varsity won state in 2024 with a score of 125.4, and in 2016-17 IHSAA title. So far this year, Brownsburg has won the 4A regional championship, moving on to Semi-State next.
“We’ve already won team state together, and I think getting to win the individual together will mean a lot, and it’ll kind of close off a bunch of our senior careers as a is a big win for us,” said Henry.
