Lawal is standing in front of the theater trophy case. Lawal has participated in the productions in theater (“Shrek the Musical”, “Into the Woods” and “Peter and the Star Catcher”). Lawal hopes to continue her theater journey and participate in both acting and stage crew roles in the future.

An interesting person at BHS is freshman Majeedah Lawal. She lives a double life taking artsy classes like choir and theater then also playing sports like rugby, all on top of being an A student with classes like AP History and Pre-AP English. Additionally, Lawal has moved numerous times from Nigeria to Texas and further north to Indiana!

Upon arriving at Brownsburg, Lawal gushed saying, “We came on a road trip, and we absolutely loved it!” Lawal shared Brownsburg was nothing like Texas neighborhoods. “My old neighborhood in Texas was kind of chaotic, honestly,” Lawal said. “I just wanted a little bit of peace honestly.”

In her early years, she attended school in Nigeria. She recalled, “You start school as soon as you can walk!” It was no doubt that Lawal was different from her peers since birth. Lawal was “eight years old in fourth grade, almost in fifth grade.”  She often did academic competitions with 8th graders as an elementary schooler! In Nigeria, because of her above average IQ, she shared, “I was often put in higher up classes.”

However, when she made her big move to Texas, everything changed! Lawal said, “I got to Texas, and they put me in second grade, and I was absolutely furious.” She reported feeling out of place and like an outsider in the new country. She had trouble making deep connections. “I feel like it sort of built this sense of loneliness within me,” Lawal said. Luckily, as time passed, Lawal was able to engage with her peers. Lawal said, “I do have a lot of friends now, like a lot!” Lawal has moved seven times in her lifetime, and it has severely affected her upbringing. “When we decided to move, I felt like it was a little impractical in my sense,” she said. “As soon as I start trying to make connections, it’s when we decide to move.”

Despite the challenges of always being on the move, Lawal has tackled the academic system, arts (choir and theater) and rugby at BHS!  She has done two solo acts in Choralaires Choir and has a cumulative GPA of over 4.0.
