There are many seniors leaving next year for college. Life skills come with having responsibilities because you have to take initiative over your own schedule, classes and housing. However, there are many things left unsaid that are still expected of young adults in college and even beyond college. These skills are necessary to be successful in life.
The first major skill future college students need to know would be time management. Time management is already important for high school, with incentives as to not be tardy to avoid punishment, but for college and having a job, students have to be responsible to get ready or take the time it takes to arrive at a place. When paying for college, it only makes sense to attend class and be there on time, otherwise students are just wasting money.
The next very essential skill would be communication.
“Communication is so vital in college,” IU student Luke Bradford said. “9 times out of 10… they’ll let you extend deadlines for you only if you communicate with them before the day that it is due.”
Communication can benefit students especially if they have no time due to normal life reasons. This is a very useful skill for students’ later years in college when trying to get an internship or when people are providing job opportunities at job fairs. Communication is really how to get yourself out there, or in an academic sense, cooperating with deadlines or other peers on projects.
Lastly, and arguably one of the most important skills, would be financial awareness.
“Students should know how to budget and not waste money on things not needed like food, extracurricular activities, etc.,” Evansville student Jamison Ousley said.
With very expensive classes, budgeting is very important. In college, it is very hard to spend any money since students know they will have to pay possibly thousands of dollars for many years to come. That is why it is important to buy the essentials and also take full advantage of the meal swipes that they get so they get what they paid for.
All of these skills for college are very vital, especially again, considering the price. It really is worth it to communicate well, manage your time well, and also manage your expenses, to make sure they have the best of a college life that, and once students learn to do all these things independently, it will prepare them for the real world. Where nobody is telling them what to do, but still have duties and responsibilities to fulfill.
