Set the blank canvas with a background of an orange daylight, inspire generations with your poetry, let your words create a wonderland fantasy. Paint, spell out, live by your art.
The Scholastic Art and Writing contest’s entries are due December 12, 2025, in central and southern Indiana, so don’t wait any longer to get your work recognized.
The Scholastic Art and Writing contest is a prestigious program that recognizes creative teens from grades 7-12 across the United States for their work in a wide range of writing. It features a total of 29 categories, including: painting, photography, fashion, architecture and industrial design for art entries; and poetry, short stories, personal essay & memoir, journalism, critical essay and dramatic scripts for writing entries.
The prizes include The Scholastic Art and Writing awards that range from regional distinctions (honorable mention, silver key and gold key) to national recognition (silver medal and a gold key). The program also awards scholarships, with national medalists being eligible for up to $12,500, along with opportunities for recognition, publication and exhibition.
For many, the competition is an opportunity that must not be squandered, while for others, the costs outweigh the benefits. BHS visual arts department head Jason Catellier expressed his discontent with the entry fee system.
“A lot of the schools in our conference would participate in we’d be able to see some other work,” Catellier said. “The fees now are just ridiculous. I had a meeting with our conference… and no one in our conference is participating anymore.”
Senior Jessica Sovereign shared her opinion on the economic barriers Scholastic implements on students lacking necessary resources.
“There’s also some programs that they could implement for people that aren’t able to pay,” Sovereign said. “It should be more based on skill, rather than if you can pay or not.”
